Guide to Scottish Clan Tartans

The clan tartan system assigns specific tartan patterns to Scottish families and clans. While the modern system is largely a product of the 19th century, it has become a deeply meaningful part of Scottish identity and heritage. This guide profiles twenty major clan tartans with their histories, colors, and significance.

How the Clan Tartan System Works

The idea of "one clan, one tartan" became formalized in the early 1800s, particularly after King George IV's famous visit to Edinburgh in 1822, orchestrated by Sir Walter Scott. Before that period, tartans were more closely associated with regions than with specific families — a weaver in a particular area would use whatever local dyes were available, so people from the same district tended to wear similar colors regardless of clan.

The modern system is maintained by the Scottish Register of Tartans, established by the Scottish Parliament in 2008. As of recent counts, the register contains over 7,000 tartan designs, including clan tartans, corporate tartans, and commemorative designs. For the full history of how the system developed, see Plaid in Scotland.

Color Palettes

Most clan tartans are available in several color variations. "Modern" colors are bright and saturated. "Ancient" colors are lighter, meant to evoke vegetable-dyed originals. "Weathered" colors are muted, as if faded by sun and rain. "Dress" versions add white for formal occasions. "Hunting" versions use darker, earth-toned colors for outdoor wear. For more on these distinctions, see the Tartan pattern guide.
