History and Significance

Clan Donald is the largest of the Highland clans and once ruled as Lords of the Isles, controlling a vast territory across the western Highlands and islands of Scotland. The MacDonald tartan features a green and blue base with distinctive red and black stripes — a bold pattern that reflects the clan's historical importance.

The rivalry between the MacDonalds and the Campbells shaped Highland history for centuries. The Massacre of Glencoe in 1692, in which MacDonald clanspeople were killed by government soldiers including Campbells who had been offered hospitality, remains the most infamous chapter in this rivalry.

There are numerous branches of Clan Donald, each with their own tartan variations: MacDonald of Sleat, MacDonald of Clanranald, MacDonell of Glengarry, and others. The "MacDonald Lord of the Isles" tartan is a complex pattern with multiple color bands. The standard MacDonald tartan remains one of the most popular choices for people of MacDonald descent.

Wearing the MacDonald Tartan

The MacDonald tartan is available from Scottish tartan weavers and retailers in various fabric weights and color palettes (modern, ancient, weathered, and sometimes dress and hunting versions). It can be ordered as kilt-weight wool for traditional Highland dress, lighter wool for suits and trousers, or as accessories like ties, scarves, and sashes. The pattern is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans.
