Gordon Tartan
Pattern Overview
Clan: Gordon
Motto: Bydand (Steadfast)
Primary Colors: Green, navy blue, black, and yellow
History and Significance
The Gordon tartan is one of the most elegant in the clan system. It uses the Black Watch base of dark blue and green, with the addition of a thin yellow overstripe that gives it distinction. This yellow stripe makes the Gordon tartan easy to identify and has made it one of the more popular tartans for formal wear and accessories.
The Gordons were one of the most powerful families in northeastern Scotland, centered on Aberdeenshire. The chief holds the title Marquess of Huntly. The clan's military tradition is strong — the Gordon Highlanders regiment was one of the most decorated in the British Army, serving from 1794 until its amalgamation in 1994.
The Gordon Dress tartan adds white to the sett for formal occasions. The Gordon Hunting tartan uses more muted tones. All versions are based on the same fundamental Black Watch structure with the characteristic yellow stripe.
Wearing the Gordon Tartan
The Gordon tartan is available from Scottish tartan weavers and retailers in various fabric weights and color palettes (modern, ancient, weathered, and sometimes dress and hunting versions). It can be ordered as kilt-weight wool for traditional Highland dress, lighter wool for suits and trousers, or as accessories like ties, scarves, and sashes. The pattern is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans.
