Lindsay Tartan
Pattern Overview
Clan: Lindsay
Motto: Endure Fort (Endure Bravely)
Primary Colors: Dark red, green, blue, and black
History and Significance
The Lindsay tartan features a dark red and green pattern with blue accents. It is a rich, deep-toned tartan that works well in heavier fabrics like wool and tweed. The clan's Lowland origins give it a somewhat different character from the Highland tartans.
The Lindsays are one of Scotland's great Lowland families, based in Angus in the eastern Lowlands. The chief holds the title Earl of Crawford, one of the oldest earldoms in Scotland. The family's history includes Sir David Lindsay of the Mount, a 16th-century poet and playwright whose satirical works influenced Scottish literature.
The Lindsay Dress tartan adds white to the sett for formal occasions. The hunting version uses more muted, natural tones.
Wearing the Lindsay Tartan
The Lindsay tartan is available from Scottish tartan weavers and retailers in various fabric weights and color palettes (modern, ancient, weathered, and sometimes dress and hunting versions). It can be ordered as kilt-weight wool for traditional Highland dress, lighter wool for suits and trousers, or as accessories like ties, scarves, and sashes. The pattern is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans.
