Primary Colors: Green, blue, black, red, and white accents

History and Significance

The MacKenzie tartan features a dark green and blue base similar to the Black Watch, with the addition of red and white overstripes. The red stripe in particular gives the MacKenzie tartan a warmth and richness that distinguishes it from other green-based tartans.

Clan Mackenzie controlled vast territories in the northwest Highlands, centered on Ross-shire. The chiefs held the title Earl of Seaforth. The Seaforth Highlanders regiment wore the MacKenzie tartan and served in conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars through World War II.

The clan's history includes a famous seer — the Brahan Seer, Kenneth MacKenzie — whose prophecies are part of Highland folklore. The MacKenzie tartan remains widely worn and is one of the more popular choices for Highland dress.

Wearing the MacKenzie Tartan

The MacKenzie tartan is available from Scottish tartan weavers and retailers in various fabric weights and color palettes (modern, ancient, weathered, and sometimes dress and hunting versions). It can be ordered as kilt-weight wool for traditional Highland dress, lighter wool for suits and trousers, or as accessories like ties, scarves, and sashes. The pattern is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans.
