History and Significance

The Ferguson tartan features a predominantly blue and green pattern with black and red accents. It is a dark, dignified tartan that works well in both formal settings and casual wear.

The Fergusons trace their descent to Fergus Mór mac Eirc, the semi-legendary founder of the Scottish kingdom of Dalriada in the 5th century. Whether the genealogical connection is historical or mythological, it gives the Fergusons one of the oldest origin claims of any Scottish clan. The family had branches in Argyll, Perthshire, and Ayrshire.

The Ferguson tartan was recorded in the 19th century as part of the broader formalization of the clan tartan system. Its balanced, dark colorway makes it one of the more wearable clan tartans for everyday use.

Wearing the Ferguson Tartan

The Ferguson tartan is available from Scottish tartan weavers and retailers in various fabric weights and color palettes (modern, ancient, weathered, and sometimes dress and hunting versions). It can be ordered as kilt-weight wool for traditional Highland dress, lighter wool for suits and trousers, or as accessories like ties, scarves, and sashes. The pattern is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans.
