Douglas Tartan

Primary Colors: Royal blue, green, black, and gray

History and Significance

The Douglas tartan features a blue ground with green and gray stripes — a distinctive palette that sets it apart from the green-and-blue base common to many Highland tartans. The pattern has a stately, somewhat somber quality that reflects the clan's dramatic history.

The Douglas family was one of the most powerful in medieval Scotland. The "Black Douglas" and "Red Douglas" branches wielded enormous political and military power. Sir James Douglas was one of Robert the Bruce's closest companions, and the clan's history is filled with episodes of warfare, political intrigue, and rivalry with the Scottish crown.

The Douglas Grey tartan, a more muted variation, uses subdued tones suitable for everyday wear. The ancient Douglas tartan uses softer, lighter versions of the same colors.

Wearing the Douglas Tartan

The Douglas tartan is available from Scottish tartan weavers and retailers in various fabric weights and color palettes (modern, ancient, weathered, and sometimes dress and hunting versions). It can be ordered as kilt-weight wool for traditional Highland dress, lighter wool for suits and trousers, or as accessories like ties, scarves, and sashes. The pattern is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans.
