Cabin and Rustic Plaid Decor
Buffalo Check
Red-and-black buffalo check is the signature pattern of cabin decor. It works on curtains, throw pillows, table runners, and even as a statement rug. The bold scale and high contrast of the pattern give it graphic impact that holds its own against the heavy materials (wood, stone, leather) that define cabin interiors.
Tartan Throws and Blankets
A wool tartan throw draped over a leather sofa or wooden chair is a classic lodge touch. Dark tartans like Black Watch and Gordon work well with dark wood and leather. Brighter tartans like Royal Stewart add warmth and energy to rooms that might otherwise feel dark.
Mixing with Natural Materials
The cabin aesthetic works best when plaid is balanced with natural textures: rough-hewn wood, stone, wool, leather, and metal. Too much plaid in one room becomes overwhelming. A good approach is to use plaid as a secondary pattern — one or two plaid elements in a room dominated by solid, natural materials.
Beyond Red and Black
While red-and-black buffalo check is the default, cabin decor doesn't have to be limited to one palette. Forest green and navy tartans create a sophisticated lodge feel. Brown and cream checks feel warm without being as bold. Black and white buffalo check offers a more modern take on the cabin aesthetic.
