Plaid Upholstery and Furniture

Plaid upholstery makes a strong statement. A tartan wingback chair or a plaid sofa becomes the focal point of any room. The commitment is larger than a throw pillow, but the impact is proportional.

Classic Pieces

The tartan wingback chair is the most traditional plaid furniture piece. Upholstered in wool tartan, it adds warmth and character to a living room, study, or library. Black Watch, Royal Stewart, and Gordon tartans are popular choices. Plaid sofas are a bigger commitment — they dominate a room — but in the right setting (a den, a cabin, a traditional living room), they work beautifully.

Fabric Considerations

Upholstery fabric needs to be durable. Wool tartan in a tight weave holds up well to daily use and maintains its appearance over time. Tweed is another excellent choice for upholstery — its texture hides wear and its construction is inherently sturdy. Cotton plaids can work for occasional chairs and cushions but may not hold up as well on heavily used pieces.

Mixing with Solids

A plaid upholstered piece works best in a room with mostly solid-colored furniture and textiles. One plaid sofa or chair, surrounded by solid and textured companions, reads as intentional and sophisticated. Multiple plaid furniture pieces in one room can quickly become overwhelming.
